Friendship Peak is one of the most accessible places in the Indian Himalaya to move beyond trekking and experience a real high-altitude climbing expedition. Rising to 5,289 m in the Pir Panjal range above Manali, the mountain combines a beautiful approach through the upper Beas Valley with snow slopes, crampon work, rope systems and a long alpine summit day.
The route begins from Dhundi and climbs through Bakarthach towards Lady Leg, where the character of the journey changes from trekking to mountaineering. Above base camp, snow conditions increasingly determine how the mountain is climbed.
Friendship Peak is often marketed as a beginner peak, but that description needs context. Previous technical climbing experience is not always necessary, but good fitness, acclimatization, practical snow training and disciplined guide-led movement are essential. Snow stability, weather and avalanche conditions can change the difficulty of the mountain considerably.
Himalayan High therefore treats Friendship Peak as a climbing expedition rather than a compressed summit trek. Our itinerary includes time to acclimatize, a dedicated technical training day, a higher summit camp and a reserve day for weather or a second opportunity when conditions remain safe.
- Purposeful acclimatization: gradual progression from Manali through Bakarthach and Lady Leg before sleeping at Summit Camp.
- Practical mountain training: crampons, ice axe, self-arrest, fixed ropes, jumar, rope movement and controlled descent techniques are practiced before the summit push.
- Private expedition style: small private teams allow better guide attention, flexible pacing and more meaningful summit decisions.
- Summit integrity: the objective is the true 5,289 m summit, not a lower col or shoulder presented as a successful summit.
- Safety over statistics: weather, snow stability, avalanche hazard, health and team pace determine whether the climb continues.
For trekkers who want to take their first serious step into Himalayan mountaineering, the Friendship Peak Expedition from Manali offers an excellent progression from trekking into snow and alpine climbing.
