Most treks in Ladakh follow known valleys, popular villages or established pass routes. The Padum to Sarchu trek via Shade belongs to a very different category. It is a deep Zanskar traverse that moves away from the familiar trekking circuits and enters a quieter, harder and far less travelled section of the region.
The journey begins around Padum, the cultural heart of Zanskar, and gradually moves into the remote interiors through Stongdey, Tsazer, Ningri and Shade. From Shade, the route continues towards Tso Tokphu, Kormoch, Satak and Tso Mesik before finally reaching Sarchu and exiting towards Manali.
This is one of Himalayan High’s rarest Ladakh and Zanskar treks, built for experienced trekkers who want a real wilderness traverse, not a beginner-friendly high-altitude holiday.
What makes this route special is not one single viewpoint, pass or village. It is the complete crossing. The trek links old Zanskari settlements, lonely camps, hidden lake sections and a chain of high passes, including Siachun La, Ningri La, Gautang La, Nialo Konste La and Gotunta La. This gives the journey the character of an expedition-style trek rather than a standard fixed-trail itinerary.
Shade adds a rare human dimension to the route. Often described as one of Zanskar’s most isolated villages, it sits deep inside a landscape where access, weather, trail conditions and logistics still matter. Reaching it on foot gives the trek a sense of arrival that is difficult to create on more commercial trails.
The Padum to Sarchu line is best suited for trekkers who already understand the demands of high-altitude travel. Long walking days, remote camping, multiple passes above 4900m and limited exit options make this a serious journey. For the right team, however, it offers exactly what is becoming harder to find in the Himalayas: silence, scale, culture, commitment and true remoteness.
