Mt. Thinchenkhang Climbing Expedition

The Thinchenkhang climb (also spelled Tenchenkhang) takes you to a 6,010 m summit beside Kanchenjunga in West Sikkim. It is graded a trekking peak, but it asks for real mountaineering skills: glacial moraine, scree, snow and crevasse ground.

From Yuksom the trail climbs through rhododendron forest to Sachen and Tshokha, then up through Phedang to the meadows of Dzongri at 3,960 m, where a full day is kept for a walk to Dzongri Top and Dzongri La. The trail runs on through Kokchurong to Thansing at 3,890 m, where the peak stands in view, then climbs to base camp at 4,200 m. From there the mountain is built in stages: loads carried up to Camp 1 and Camp 2, nights at 5,000 m and 5,400 m, then a separate summit day. One reserve day sits right after it. The way out retraces your steps through Thansing and Tshokha to Yuksom.

• Days: 17 days, 16 nights, including a flexible reserve day.
• Start and end: Bagdogra airport and back, pickup and drop included, with Yuksom as the trek's start and end.
• Grade: challenging+. Most days are 3 to 7 hours; a few can run longer.
• Best months: April, and October to November.

Do not read 'trekking peak' as easy. Climbing Thinchenkhang is harder than a 6,000 m peak in Ladakh, and previous experience helps a great deal.

Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Simvo, Frey, Rathong and Koktang stand over the approach, and the summit looks across to peaks in Sikkim, Nepal and Bhutan. We run it as a small private group, usually 2 to 10, with acclimatisation built into the itinerary. If you already know Goecha La, the Goecha La trek covers the same approach without the climb.

• Thinchenkhang summit, 6,010 m: A standalone summit day from Camp 2 at 5,400 m, about 7 hours and 12 km in all.
• A neighbour of Kanchenjunga: The panorama takes in more than 16 peaks of Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal, among them Kanchenjunga, Pandim, Simvo, Jupono, Frey, Rathong, Koktang and the Kabru group.
• Rhododendron forest: The early days from Yuksom climb through it. The bloom runs from late March to early July.
• Dzongri and a high rest day: A full day at 3,960 m with a walk to Dzongri Top and Dzongri La (4,300 m) before the route goes any higher.
• Thansing: The camp at 3,890 m from where Thinchenkhang is seen, and the last camp before base camp.
• Two high camps: Camp 1 at 5,000 m and Camp 2 at 5,400 m, each reached after a load ferry, with the climb broken into short, deliberate steps.
• Snow, moraine and crevasse ground: Real mountaineering terrain, which is why this peak teaches more than its trekking-peak grade suggests.
• A reserve day after the summit: One flexible day at Camp 2 so weather can be absorbed without rushing the summit.
• Villages and culture: Lepcha, Sikkimese, Nepali and Subba culture along the way, with Yuksom as the start and end.
• Private team: Your own group, usually 2 to 10, with a local crew.

The Thinchenkhang climb is worked out in stages from base camp at 4,200 m. Nothing is rushed to the top in one go; each camp is carried up before anyone sleeps in it.

The ladder, day by day

• Day 8, load ferry: carry loads from base camp to Camp 1 (5,000 m) and come back to sleep at base camp. About 6 hours and 10 km.
• Day 9, move to Camp 1: about 4 hours and 5 km, and a night at 5,000 m.
• Day 10, load ferry: carry up to Camp 2 (5,400 m) and return to Camp 1. About 6 hours and 8 km.
• Day 11, move to Camp 2: about 4 hours and 5 km, and a night at 5,400 m.
• Day 12, summit day: Camp 2 to the 6,010 m top and back, about 7 hours and 12 km.
• Day 13, reserve day: kept at Camp 2.

This is the idea of climbing high and sleeping lower: the body sees the height on the carry, then recovers before it sleeps there. It is why the two camps are separate nights at 5,000 m and 5,400 m, not one long push.

Why the reserve day sits where it does. It comes straight after the summit day, at the highest camp. If the weather turns on the planned day, the summit attempt can be moved to the next one, and the group is not forced to go in poor conditions. If the summit goes to plan, the day is spent resting before the descent.

The ground. The terrain on this peak is rocky, with snow fields and crevasse ground, and the route camps on moraine and scree. Depending on conditions, rope, an ice axe and snow gear may be needed to complete it. The itinerary describes day 14 as a descent from Camp 2 to Thansing of about 7 hours, a long walk after the summit, so keep something in reserve.

Over the days at 5,000 m and 5,400 m the work is mostly about patience: eating, drinking, resting and keeping to the plan.

The turn-back decision belongs to the climb leader, on conditions and how the group is moving, not the clock. A summit is optional; a safe descent is not.

The first seven days of the Thinchenkhang climb are the Goecha La approach. They are the part that prepares you for 5,000 m, and they are worth reading before you decide on the peak.

Day 1 is the drive from Bagdogra airport to Yuksom (1,700 m), about 6 hours. Yuksom is the roadhead for the Dzongri and Goecha La trails in Khangchendzonga National Park, and the trail starts at the forest check post on the edge of the village.

• Day 2: Yuksom to Sachen (2,179 m), about 3 hours and 8 km, in forest.
• Day 3: Sachen to Tshokha (2,956 m), about 3 hours and 7 km.
• Day 4: Tshokha to Dzongri (3,960 m) via Phedang (3,500 m) and Deurali Top (3,980 m), about 6 hours and 11 km. This is the long day of the approach.
• Day 5: an acclimatisation day at Dzongri, with a short walk to Dzongri Top and Dzongri La (4,300 m), about 2 hours.
• Day 6: Dzongri to Thansing (3,890 m) via Kokchurong (3,660 m), about 5 hours and 8 km.
• Day 7: Thansing to Thinchenkhang base camp (4,200 m), 4 to 5 hours and 8 km.

Why the order matters. The first two days are short, so the legs and the lungs settle into the forest. Day 4 climbs about 1,000 m in sleeping height, so day 5 is a rest day with a gentle walk higher, which is the pattern we use on high routes: climb high, sleep low. The route then drops slightly to Thansing and rises only about 300 m to base camp.

What you walk through. The early stretch is rhododendron forest. These flower from late March to early July. Higher up the forest gives way to alpine meadows around Phedang and Dzongri, and then to rocky ground and moraine near base camp. Birds and animals appear if you are lucky; nothing here is promised.

The approach is the same one used by the Goecha La trek, so if you have walked it you already know the first week. If you have not slept above 4,000 m, our Dzongri La trek is a lower step to try first.

Drink more than you want to and tell the trek leader early if your head aches. The acclimatisation built into this itinerary only works if it is used.

Thinchenkhang (6,010 m, also written Tenchenkhang) sits in the Kanchenjunga range of West Sikkim, in the area of Khangchendzonga National Park that Goecha La trekkers know. It is a lower peak than its neighbours, and that is part of its appeal: you stand among bigger mountains on a summit you can realistically attempt.

What stands around it. The peaks on this side of the range include:

• Kanchenjunga, 8,586 m, the highest of them;
• Kabru, in several summits: Kabru South (7,318 m), Kabru Dome (6,600 m) and Kabru Forked (6,100 m);
• Talung (7,349 m), Simvo (6,812 m), Rathong (6,679 m) and Pandim (6,691 m);
• Koktang (6,147 m), Frey (5,853 m) and Jupono (5,650 m).

From the summit the panorama takes in more than 16 peaks of Bhutan, Sikkim and Nepal. Chomolhari, Narsing, Kumbhakarna and Goecha Peak are among those named on our page.

Near Goecha La. The Goecha La pass (4,950 m) and its lakes, Goecha Lake at 4,775 m and Samity Lake at 4,301 m, lie in the same landscape. The Goecha La trek reaches them on foot. The Thinchenkhang climb turns off the same approach at Thansing and goes up toward the peak instead.

The villages. Villages on the way carry Lepcha, Sikkimese, Nepali and Subba culture.

Comparing the routes. If you want the pass and the lakes, the Goecha La trek is the one, and the Goecha La - Kasturi La circuit goes further. If you want to put on crampons and climb, this is the peak.

Thinchenkhang is seen from the campsite at Thansing. The post-monsoon months of October and November offer the steadiest weather.

A peak climb in Sikkim has more paperwork than a trek, and for a foreign group it needs planning ahead. This is what the Thinchenkhang expedition involves, and what we take on.

The climbing permit. We arrange the climbing permit for Mt. Thinchenkhang. It is made up of an IMF handling fee, with equipment hire for the liaison officer who goes with the expedition, and the Sikkim peak climbing royalty, which depends on whether the team is foreign, domestic or local. Permit fees are charged on an actual basis, with a service charge. We give you the exact breakdown when you tell us your group and dates.

Khangchendzonga National Park. Park entry permits are issued at the forest check post at the edge of Yuksom, where the trail begins. Fees are per head and per day, and different for Indian nationals, foreign nationals, students and local staff. There are also tent pitching charges and charges for camera use. The park authorities set these, and they change.

For foreign nationals. A Sikkim Restricted Area Permit is needed, and is now issued only online through the e-FRRO portal. It must be approved before you reach Melli, where the road enters Sikkim. A Protected Area Permit is also needed and is arranged through a registered operator for a group of at least two. Carry photo ID on the road.

Send us your passport details early. The online permit has to be approved before you cross into Sikkim, so it cannot be left to the arrival day.

Insurance for the crew. The permit rules require insurance for camp crews, porters and pack animals.

Getting to Yuksom. From Bagdogra airport, Yuksom is about 155 to 160 km and 6 to 8 hours by road, via Siliguri, Melli, Jorethang, Legship and Tashiding. No bus or shared jeep runs from the airport to Yuksom, which is why our pickup is part of the trip. The road is poorly lit and not one for after dark, so the drive is planned in daylight, and the last day ends with the drive back to Bagdogra.

If you plan a late flight home, tell us. Leave time after the reserve day so a delay on the mountain does not cost you a connection.

The Thinchenkhang climb is a 17-day expedition, 16 nights, with one flexible reserve day included. It is graded challenging+. The source of our grade notes is plain: days of 5 to 8 hours, sometimes more, steep ascents and descents, camping on moraine and scree, and sleeping altitude above 5,000 m. Only experienced trekkers are advised to do it.

What it asks of you

• Stamina and fitness: long approach days and a 7-hour summit day, with weeks of cardio behind you.
• Nerve: snow, rock and crevasse ground. Being comfortable with exposure matters more than raw speed.
• Altitude experience: previous time above 4,000 m helps a great deal.
• Patience: the days at 5,000 m and 5,400 m are slow on purpose.

The fitness notes for this peak say it should never be taken lightly and is harder than a 6,000 m peak in Ladakh. If you have only done easy treks, a lower step such as the Goecha La trek will show you how you handle the height first.

How we run it. Your group is private, usually 2 to 10, with a local crew. Acclimatisation is built into the days: the rest day at Dzongri, the load ferries to each high camp, and a reserve day after the summit. Waste is carried down.

We have about 10,000 successful summits and over 85% summit success on peaks above 6,000 m. Across our treks we have had zero fatalities and zero injuries since inception, kept by discipline and not by luck, and that discipline includes turning back when it is the right call.

When to go. April, and October to November. The post-monsoon months are the best for stable weather. The rhododendron bloom of late March to early July is a bonus in April.

Who it suits. Experienced trekkers who want to step into mountaineering on a real peak, and who like a small group and an unhurried pace. If you want a quick, big-group or fast-schedule climb, this is not that trip.
